Elias Parish-Alvars is a famous English harpist and a composer from the Romantic era. During his lifetime, Parish-Alvars composed some of the most important and remarkable music for the harp, Hector Berlioz praised him as the "Liszt of the harp". This interpretation report is an analysis of the harp playing techniques required in Elias Parish-Alvars’ Introduction and Variations on a Theme from Bellini's Norma, Op. 36. The report is divided into four chapters: the first chapter discusses the motivation and the purpose, as well as the methodology and scope of the study; the second chapter focuses on the background of Parish-Alvars’ compositional life, the evolution of the harp during the Romantic era, and Parish-Alvars’ own harp playing techniques; the third chapter is devoted to the analysis and performance interpretation of Parish-Alvars’ Introduction and Variations on a Theme from Bellini's Norma, Op. 36; and finally, the fourth chapter is the conclusion of this study.
