Pourpose : Heath Care Management and medical students are the important human resources of medical tourism and will play a big role in its development in the future. With regard to the effect of work values on a person’s views and attitudes toward work, inherently moderating or mediating his or her work behaviors and performance, this study aims to explore the labor power of medical tourism, and work values, perceptions of and attitudes toward medical tourism of this industry-related students in Taiwan. Research Method : To explore the labor power in medical tourism, the researcher interviewed 6 managers from this industry and made summaries from the interviews. Besides, using purposive sampling, a questionaire survey was administered the 314 eligible participants with a valid sample of 295 students (response rate= 93.95%) from the Public Health, Leisure Management, Foreign Languages, and Medicine fields. The Work Value and Perception of Medical Tourism Scale, modified from the Work Value Scale developed by Dr. Tei-Xiung Wu in 1996, has adequate expert validity and test-retest reliability and was used to measure subjects’ demographic information, work values, perceptions of medical tourism, and attitudes toward medical tourism. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results : The research findings are as follows: 1. Practitioners regard Chinese market as the major one in the future market for medical tourism. Competency and communication skills are the critical required qualities for the manpower in this industry. 2. Practitioners expect the Government may assist in amendment of law on regulations and industry cross-sector cooperation. 3. The average scores on work values and perceptions are, respectively, 3.82 and 3.75, which are both higher than those of overall workers. 4.The information from demographic variables indicates that nursing students and subjects who live with family member(s) have higher scores on work values (p<.05). 5. Besides, gender and internship experience are the important variables in work values (p<.05). 6. Perception on medical tourism and work values are significantly associated (p<.05). Conclusions and recommendations : The research results suggest that front-line workers can enhance their perceptions, attitudes and expertise in the area of medical tourism. In the origin of labor power in medical tourism, nursing students are found to be more potential; therefore, the nursing departments can include lectures surrounding medical tourism to improve the nation’s labor quality on this industry.
