The purpose of this study is to discuss the relationship between work stress and mental health of R&D personnel in high-tech companies. The effort-reward imbalance model was applied as the evaluation tool for work stress, and the Taiwanese Depression Scale was used for mental health evaluation. Respective correlation among five dimensions of body and mind, namely, intrinsic effort, extrinsic effort, self-esteem feedback, money feedback, social status feedback and depressive tendency was analyzed. This study applied cross-sectional questionnaire survey, aiming 354 R&D personnel of a certain public high-tech telecommunication equipment supplier in Taiwan as subjects. Data were collected by self-reported electronic questionnaires distributed to all R&D’s software and hardware personnel. A total of 150 effective samples were collected with an effective collection rate of 42.37%. This study found that the more the involvement in work is, the more the effect on mental health becomes (_=0.325, p<0.01); the more the reward on self-esteem and occupational reputation is, the less the effect on mental health becomes (_=-0.297, p<0.01). 30.7% R&D personnel showed the sign of depression, and some even had severe depressive symptoms that required assistance from professional organizations or medical institutes.
