摘要
專業(profession)可以說是一種職業，一種事業。具有獨立性，名稱專屬及業務專屬的特性，在政府的督導之下執業或開業，對社會大眾提供更直接、更有保障的服務。 物理治療為國內新興的一項專業，雖然政府目前尚未制定有關物理治療專業的法律規定，然一些從事此專業的人員不斷地自我提昇，為殘障及病人提供高水準的服務。從國外的制度來看，物理治療都有完善的法律規定，開業亦為一普遍的情形。為了使物理治療專業更紮實，我們應該努力建立起屬於國人自己的專業科學基礎，發揮互助合作、積極進取及手腦並用的專業精神。

Physical therapy is a young profession in the Republic of China. The social image about the profession has not been well established. This paper discusses (1) The definition and the character of a profession. (2) Various definitions and titles of physical therapy. (3) Characteristics of physical therapy. (4) Analysis of private, practice and homecare availability in 37 WCPT member countries. The aim of this paper is to familiarize physical therapists with their profession and so that they can meet professional standards. Physical therapists must work close together to establish the profession on a scientific basis and to actively cooperate full to further build their profession.
