Comuptational Approach to the Teaching of Translation Methods

The concept of “degree of freedom” is crucial for students of translation and should be taught in the beginning. Yet the concept has been difficult to define and to teach. To address this weakness in the teaching of translation, a computer system called TransFree is proposed. The system attempts to define “degree of freedom” in a clear computational way and, based on techniques in language technology and drawing from electronic language resources, is able to offer versions of translation for a given source text according to the different definitions for various stages on the “degree of freedom” continuum. The system lets the student practice the translation of a given sentence, decides on its status on the “degree of freedom” continuum, and offers for consideration versions of translation based on other criteria on the continuum. Furthermore, the system can be incorporated into a larger system for teaching various techniques in translation, relating the concept of “degree of freedom” to these techniques. Tackling the problem of teaching an important concept in translation, this article hopes to point out a new direction in teaching translation as a result of the marriage between computer science, language technology and daily increasing electronic language resources.
