The prevalence of allergic disease has been increasing steadily in recent years. Allergic disease begins to manifest in the first years of life. The disorder usually manifests initially in the form of food allergy and atopic dermatitis, followed in later stages by airway allergy. This has led to the adoption of preventive measures in those children with a high risk of atopy. Genetic factors, diet, infections, allergen exposure, and medications all have been implicated as contributing factors for atopic disease development. This makes it very difficult to develop preventive strategies due to the lack of consensus with regards to the underlying cause. After years of collaborative effort, a strategic guideline has been suggested by the World Allergy Organization IAACI (WAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). They have attempted to provide a sound basis for practical action to be taken by governments, health care professionals, lay organizations, and patients at a national level. Here we provide a brief review of this strategic guideline. (J Pediatr Resp Dis 2011; 7:86-92)
