Background: Studies have reported that younger age and female gender are independent risk factors for extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). There should be differential expressions of TB between children and adults. Similar reports from Taiwan are lacking, therefore we attempted to compare the age and sex difference of extra-pulmonary and pulmonary TB in Taiwan. Methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out on TB patients reported to and confirmed by the National Tuberculosis Registry Campaign at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital- Kaohsiung Medical Center, from July 2001 to December 2005. Characteristics of demography and clinical features were obtained from medical case records and analyzed. Results: The result showed that (1) the average age of the extra-pulmonary TB group is younger than the pulmonary TB group; (2) the most common site of extra-pulmonary TB is bone/joint TB; (3) Organ involvements are different between childhood and adulthood; and (4) Organ involvements are different according to gender.
