Background and objective. This study aimed to understand the subjective perceptions of occupational risk in emergency department workers in a medical center. The results may help to inform hospitals currently working to minimize occupational hazards for emergency department workers. Method. A structured questionnaire was used to evaluate what emergency department workers in a medical center in Southern Taiwan perceived their occupational hazards to be. Results. In total, 115 responses were valid and analyzed. In the infectious diseases dimension, workers were most worried by infection with AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)(91.3%); in the poisonous substances dimension, workers were most worried about contact with insecticide poisoned patients (82.6%); in the manual handling dimension, workers worried most about developing low back pain (88.7%); in the workplace environmental hazard dimension, workers worried most about X ray exposure (81.7%); in the mental stress dimension, workers were most worried about violent assault by the family of a patient (81.7%). The number of years spent working, occupational position, the meaning of the work to the worker and marital status were found to be important factors predicting perceived risk of occupational hazards confronting emergency department workers. Conclusion. In order to improve the quality of care provided by emergency department workers and to minimize occupational hazards, hospitals must take the occupational hazards as perceived by emergency department workers into consideration.
