Gastrointestinal symptoms are common in uremic patients. Uremia cause pathological and physiological changes through the gastrointestinal tract, leading to the diseases of upper, lower gastrointestinal tract. The major upper gastrointestinal diseases of dialysis patients are dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease, gastroparesis, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The important lower gastrointestinal tract diseases of uremia patients include ischemic bowel disease, idiopathic perforation of the colon, constipation and fecal impaction, diverticular disease, and angiodysplasia. The gastrointestinal complications not only cause physical effect but also decrease quality of life and even death in patients with uremia. Therefore, an aggressive diagnosis and treatment is an important issue.
