Arteriovenous fistula and graft are the choices of the types of vascular access for uremic patients who require maintenance hemodialysis. Stenosis, thrombus formation and failure of maturation of both arteriovenous fistula and graft are critical problems commonly seen in the clinical setting. According to previous studies, certain medications, including anti-hypertensive agents and anti-platelets, may reduce the rate of thrombus formation and loss of patency of both arteriovenous fistula and graft. High dosage of fish oil may decrease the incidence rate of thrombus formation and cardiovascular events. To find out possible medications that can effectively improve the maturity and patency of vascular access becomes very important from the clinical viewpoint, thus more clinical trials are needed in the future.
