Choice of dialysis modality in the elderly with end-stage renal disease is a challenge to face. Peritoneal dialysis has the advantage of being physiologically gentle and can be performed at home. However, its requirement of learning and performing daily medical techniques remains a barrier to this patient group. More than 60% of patients over 80 years of age may need assistance. As for hemodialysis, such requirement is low and more convenient but the time spent in treatment and transportation to and from the dialysis units may incur significant costs. Besides, the elderly may also be very tired during the hemodialysis process, and the development of vascular access may be relatively difficult. In this review, the benefits and disadvantages of the two dialysis modalities are thoroughly discussed.
