Elevated protein catabolism and malnutrition are common problems in the patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Therefore, the appropriate protein intake is a major topic in CKD. Because high protein diet may cause the glomerular damage by increased intraglomerular pressure and glomerular hyperfiltration, the current study recommends low protein diet may delay the progression to renal failure. According to the current studies, low protein diet with adequate calorie intake is with a minimal risk of malnutrition, protein-energy wasting, or cachexia. Therefore, low protein diet with adequate calorie intake may be an appropriate management of CKD.
