Laser applications in medicine have been promoted for more than forty years. As the laser technology advances, the applications in dentistry become a more important issue. The commonly used laser types include Carbon Dioxide laser (Co2 laser) , Neodymium Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet laser (Nd:YAG laser) , Dioxide laser, Erbium Yttium-Aluminum-Gamet laser (Er:YAG laser) and Erbium Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnett laser (Er:Cr:YSGG laser). The purpose of this article is to review the potential applications of laser technology to periodontal practice, including soft tissue incision, hemostasis, calculus removal, cementum ablation and bone ablation. Furthermore, the outcomes of potential laser treatments in terms of clinical periodontal parameters are also reviewed.
