The Impact of the Altermodern Art Current on Fashion Design in the East Asia Region

當代變異藝術對東亞地區服裝設計的影響

摘要


The Altermodern, art current subscribes to the logic that contemporary art has immersed itself into the global state of culture as creolization becomes the dominant creative force instead of the Postmodernist multiculturalism mindset. Artists no longer adhere to their cultural roots and instead become navigators connecting disparate culture localities as they interpret signs into new constellations of meanings in their art production. Delineations between high art and the applied arts are now nearly extinct as the realms of art and fashion are currently highly interconnected. The East Asia region currently represents a fresh form of hybrid modernity which can be explored by implementing the new art theory. The author attempts to investigate the influence deriving from Altermodern on fashion design, and how this may impact the conceptualization phase of fashion design. This approach may represent an alternative perspective contrasting the older Postmodernist ideology. The Interpretivist research methodology is employed in this study together with visual research methods including observation and semiotics analysis. A potentially strong connection is identified between the Altermodern sensibility and fashion design practice in the East Asia region. However, fashion design practice at least at present, seeks legitimization from the established fashion design centers located in Europe.
