A Research on the Praxis of Combined Application of Case Method and Role-play Technique in Teaching "Shakespeare and the Art of Speaking" Course: Take Henry V as an Example

Contemporary university students in Taiwan are generally found lacking in a humanistic scope and considerably falling short of training on communication and expression skills. In addition, the conventional university courses are conducted in large lecture classes, resulting in students' inadequacy in hands-on practice and independent thinking ability. Besides, the increasing scarcity of classical literature courses in school curriculum has become prevalent across universities. To solve the above issues, the present thesis probes into the question: how to combine "case method" and "role-play technique" in implementing "Shakespeare and the Art of Speech", an innovative, cross-disciplinary course, with a view to improving the foregoing predicament in teaching? The present research incorporates the results of my teaching praxis of a two-semester course and concludes that: combining the case method with role-play technique is a very suitable approach for teaching Shakespeare plays in that it facilitates students' active learning, free expression, deeper thinking, and apparently enhances their speaking skills. Moreover, Shakespeare's plays are highly applicable to contemporary transformation in classroom, which allows students to be stimulated to learn classical works and thus effectively extends the longevity of classical courses.
