Changes in Blood Lipid Peroxidation Markers after a Single Bout of Exhaustive Exercise

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether an acute single bout of strenuous exercise would induce oxidative stress. Twenty-two male rugby players served as the subjects for this experiment. The subjects performed an acute period of exhaustive exercise on a treadmill, with the exhaustive exercise starting at 6 km/hr for 3min followed by gradual increases of treadmill speed and times to 9km/hr for 2min, 11km/hr for 2min, 13km/hr for 2min, and 14km/hr until exhaustion. Blood samples were collected at rest and immediately after exhaustive exercise for measurements of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, lactate, and creatine kinase (CK). The results showed that there was a significant increase in the plasma MDA, lactate, and CK after exhaustive exercise. SOD activity showed a significant decrease after exhaustive exercise. The results suggest that a single bout of exhaustive exercise can induce oxidative stress and decrease the SOD activity for well-trained rugby players.
