Taiwan underwent the first transfer of presidential power to an opposition party in the ROC's history on Taiwan thorough the presidential election in the year of 2000, which marked one of the critical achievements in the third wave of democracy, and also became an example to emerging democratic countries. This first transfer of political power from a ruling party to an opposition party symbolizes a significant change in Taiwan's political evolution. As Taiwan's democracy is developed with a background vastly different from the West, genuine phenomena and results associated with political operation are viewed as essential issues for future political development in Taiwan.
