The general immunologic competence in diabetes mellitus (DM) is decreased. Dose this promote the growth of fungi in the external ear canal ? A total of 240 DM and 99 non-DM subjects were selected randomly for mycological studies of the external ear canals. The following results were revealed (”M” represents molds: ”Y” represents yeasts and yeast-like fungi): (1)In the DM group, 33 cases (13.75%) yielded positive culture for ”M” and 174 cases (72.50%) for ”Y”. In the non-DM group, 8 cases (8.08%) yielded positive culture for ”M” and 74 cases (74.75%) for ”Y”. Thus there was no difference of the incidence of otomycotic infection between the DM and the non-DM group. (2)In the DM group, when the AC sugar was greater than 250 mg/dL, the infection rate of molds was higher than the non-DM group. (3)In the DM group, the infection rate of otomycosis was not related to the duration of DM.
