Over 50% of the world population are bilingual. As a result of emigration to developed countries, more and more societies are multilingual and multicultural. When two or more speech communities share the same territory, i. e., when two or more languages co-exist in the same area, a number of phenomena tend to occur naturally, such as code switching, borrowing, bilingualism and diglossia. In this paper we study the said phenomena not only from a purely linguistic perspective, but also from a psycholinguistic and a sociolinguistic one. We refer to two particular cases of bilingual situations: Catalonia -Spanish and Catalan- and Taiwan —standard Chinese and Taiwanese (a variety of Southern Mm)-. In the final chapter we analyse a trilingual conversation —Chinese, Taiwanese and Spanish- held by two Taiwanese subjects.
