Preparation of Polystyrene by Dispersion Polymerization

本研究利用聚乙烯基吡咯燒烷酮(PVP)爲穩定劑,2,2-偶氮雙異丁膊(AIBN)爲起始劑,苯乙烯單體於甲醇中,進行分數聚合反應,探討最初單體濃度、最初起始劑濃度、最初穩定劑濃度和穩定劑分子量,對於粒子大小的影響。由實驗數據,粒子粒逕(D(下標 W))發現和最初單體濃度的0.35次方成正比、最初起始劑濃度的0.39次方成正比及最初穩定劑(PVP, K-90)濃度的0.31次方成反比。粒子粒逕對時間作圖,發現在聚合反應6次小時內,是一直線關係。單一散度的聚苯乙烯顆粒聚合過程中,觀察其分子量和分子量分佈的變化,並無膠化效應發生。且在聚合反應後,亦無發現寡聚合物存留在分散媒中。由以上的結果,提出較適當的粒子成長機制。

Stryene was polymerized in methanol by dispersion polymerization with 2,2′-azobis isobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator and poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a stabilizer. The effects of initial monomer concentration, initial initiator concentration, initial stabilizer concentration, and stabilizer molecular weight, on the size of polymer particles have been investigated. The weight average particle diameter (D(subscript W)) is proportional to -0.31 power of the stabilizer (PVP, K-90) concentration, 0.39 power of the initial initiator concentration, and 0.35 power of the initial monomer concentration. The values of D(subscript W) decrease linearly with the value of the solubility parameter. The diameters of particles increase linearly with the reaction time in 6h. No gel effect was observed during the polymerization period to prepare monodisperse polymer particles. After the polymerization, no oligomers in dispersion medium was founded. From the above results, a scheme for the particle nucleation and growth during polymerization process is proposed.
