Immunological Studies in a Silicone Exposed Population-A One Year Follow Up Report

Silicone was first introduced over three decades ago. Since that time, they have been used extensively for both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Shortly after silicone breast implants were developed, plastic surgeons became aware of some of the risks and complications associated with silicone. Controversy concerning the safety of silicone has arose wide discussions among the pros and cons. Until now, no definite answer has been found yet. The present study was designed to determine (1) whether silicone exposure induces immunological disorder in human? (2) will the immunological disorder reverse after the removal of silicone? A total of 45 patients received either direct silicone injections or silicone implants were evaluated by immunological screening tests. Nineteen patients undergone total or partial removal of silicone and were followed with repeat tests. Results showed high titer ANA levels in 23 patients (57.5%). For those who underwent surgery, decrease in ANA levels were observed for all patients 2 to 4 months after surgery. These data suggest that (1) ANAs are closely associate with silicone exposure, (2) ANAs might be a reliable serological markers preceding development of any silicone-related symptoms, and (3) for those who underwent surgical removal of silicone, ANA is a good indicator for follow-up serological study.
