Endoscopic sphincterotomy has been well established for the treatment of common bile duct stone, the success rate of extraction after endoscopic sphincterotomy with Dormia basket or balloon catheter can reach up to 95%, and the remaining cases require other methods. Mechanical lithotripsy is one alternative. Twenty-one cases of large common bile duct stones, 8 males and 13 females, with the mean age of 60.1±11.1 years (39-84) underwent mechanical lithotripsy. The mean size of stone was 2.3±0.4cm, the mean numbers of stones were 1.6±0.8(1-4), and the mean numbers of sessions needed to perform mechanical lithotripsy were 1.4±0.6(1-3). The success rate was 85.7% and there were no complications. Mechanical lithotripsy is an effective method for treatment of large common bile duct stone.
