An Investigation of Technical College EFL Students' Vocabulary Learning Concepts

並列摘要

This study aims to investigate EFL students' cognitive concepts toward English vocabulary learning. The subjects were 293 students at a technical college in central Taiwan. The investigation explored students' perspectives of word learning, seeking to understand their opinions about vocabulary learning. The instruments used are a refined Vocabulary Learning Concept Questionnaire and an Individual Background Information Questionnaire. The findings obtained are as follow: 1) The majority of subjects prefer to use English-Chinese dictionary (50.11%) or Electronic English-Chinese Bilingual Dictionary (9.52%). Very few subjects (0.23%) responded that they have ever consulted an English-English Dictionary. 2) Most subjects consider frequent exposure to the target words through reading is the most helpful method to learn English vocabulary. It is not very necessary to memorize every word in isolation or to learn a large size vocabulary more than they will use. 3) The subjects' home language had a negative correlation with common concepts about vocabulary learning, which means that subjects' home language was negative related to common concepts about vocabulary learning. In other words, the more frequently a student spoke home language, the less likely the student would agree upon vocabulary learning concepts.
