Nature and Man's Spiritual Awakening in Henry David Thoreau's Walden

The paper explores and describes the invigorating process of Thoreau's (and his ardent encouraging of his countrymen's) spiritual awakening which is possible to occur in nature; his bold and perhaps wise deviation from ”tradition direction”-relying instead on ”inner direction” is essentially based upon his awareness of man's ultimate spirituality possible gained through man's rich communion with nature. The nature he represents in Walden is a vital whole without any sense of hierarchy, in which man as only a parcel of nature can achieve a harmony with the whole and all the other living beings within her. Moreover, by simplifying his life to its basic essentials and by doing some sorts of ascetic discipline, Thoreau thus removes all the obstacles in the perception of essences and simultaneously, rids himself of the animal within himself. In short, through Walden a recording of his fulfillment of the values of ”self-reliant individualism,” and ”simplicity”, he himself amazingly becomes the fullest exemplar of ”plain living and high thinking”.
