Fan Chung-yen was a famous statesman of the Sung Dynasty, and also a good writer of lyric poetry. ”Yu-jia Aw”, one of his few lyric works, has been very popular among readers through the ages. There are three main features in this work. The first feature is rare in lyric poetry, namely its theme of the frontier fortress. The second feature is its straightforward descriptive qualities. A third aspect of this work is Fan Chung-yen's concern about the fate of the nation. For these reasons, this work differs from other lyrics of the early Sung Dynasty, and these differences, not only Fan's fame, have contributed to the widespread interest in ”Yu-jia Aw”. Moreover, this lyric work was a first example of the lyric presented in an outspoken manner.
