In this paper, Umberto Eco's first novel The Name of the Rose is investigated through a semiotic point of view. As a professor of Semiotics, Eco subtly applies a variety of semiotic tactics in his novel and weaves a tale of mystery and suspense. The investigation is focused on the function of referential fallacy in the novel-how it leading out the story, how it misleading the characters and how it misleading the detective.
