After Sino-Japanese War in 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan as a result of the Treaty of Shimonoseki and started its colonial period under Japanese rule. Though the Taiwanese people ”became Japanese” as a result of war, their Chinese identity never wavered. Heroic stories of resistance against Imperial Japanese rule never ceased. And even those who went to Japan for advanced studies found it difficult to give up their Chinese identity. They actively sought to identify with China by joining anti-(Japanese) government movements, traveled to China and joined locals to organize pro-China events. This paper discusses the actual movements (motivated by a strong sense of Chinese identity) by Taiwanese students in Japan while Taiwan was under Japanese rule.
