The Effects of Phonological Awareness Training on L1 Chinese University Students' English Vocabulary Retention

語音覺識對於英語字彙記憶之成效

摘要


本研究旨在探究語音覺識訓練對於英語字彙記憶之成效。二組在台灣新竹就讀大學的一年級新生參與本研究。研究者為了探究語音覺識對於英語字彙記憶的成效,比較兩種不同的教學法對於實驗組及對照組的影響。實驗組同時接受英語語音覺識訓練與英語發音課程,對照組只接受一般的英語發音課程。實驗結果顯示實驗組經過語音覺識的訓練後,的確比對照組記得較多的字彙,並已達顯著差異。

This study investigates the effect of phonological awareness (PA) training on English vocabulary retention of Ll Chinese university students in Taiwan. Two groups of frrst-year students at a university in Hsinchu, Taiwan participated in this study. In order to gauge the effect of PA training, the current study involved training university freshmen in phonemic and syllabic awareness, which is especially important for L1 Chinese students learning English vocabulary. The experimental group was trained to map sounds onto letters and syllables, while the control group was given a normal pronunciation course without PA training. Results have revealed that, in general, students in the two groups performed differently at a statistically significant level. The experimental group recalled more words on both short-term and long-term recall tests.
