The Prognosis of Perineural Invasion in Early Stage Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma-A Retrospective Study

Perineural invasion (PNI) is considered to be a factor affecting recurrence and survival in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines, PNI is considered a minor risk factor for adjuvant therapy. The effects of PNI in early stage OSCC have not been widely discussed. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between PNI and clinical outcome in early OSCC. This retrospective study analyzed the recurrence and mortality in 383 stage I or II OSCC cases, for the period 1997-2014, in which surgical treatment was used. The results revealed that PNI affected the 5-year disease-free survival and recurrence rates. When PNI was noted in early OSCC, the risk of recurrence rate increases to 1.863 times.
