Backpack load positioning and walking surface slope effects on physiological responses in climbers

This study explores the effects of backpack load positions and walking surface slopes on physiological costs of climbers. A total of 8 male subjects participated in these experiments. The independent variables were load position (upper, middle and lower) and slope (uphill, downhill and flat). The measurements criteria were the heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Each subject carried an 8 kg backpack in a random order of nine experimental combinations. The results showed that the backpack load position has no significant effects on HR, but had significant effects on shoulder RPE and whole body RPE. The slope has significant effects on all dependent variables. For the body parts, the legs RPE were the greatest, followed by the shoulders RPE, and the arms RPE as the most relaxed. This study found that the load position in the middle of the backpack was the most comfortable, while the upper was the most exhaustive while moving uphill. The middle and lower load positions were the best while walking on a flat surface. The middle load position was the most comfortable, followed by the lower, with the upper position the most exhaustive while moving downhill.
