Cross-Strait Relations: Review, New Situations, and Outlook

並列摘要

Cross-strait relations, which were ”cold politically and hot economically,” and ”cold government-to-government and hot people-to-people,” have changed significantly since the Kuomintang (KMT) team won the presidential election and came to power. The party-to-party exchanges initiated by the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC) in early 2005 and the results of three economic forums between the two parties have become valuable assets for the new government in normalizing cross-strait exchanges. The Beijing authorities have welcomed the new cross-strait policy of the government led by Ma Ying-jeou and Vincent Siew; and the institutionalized cross-strait negotiation mechanism, which had been severed for more than 10 years, has resumed. Political exchanges between the two sides are thawing, and political relations are making great improvements. In prospect, normalization of cross-strait economic relations is in motion, while normalization of cross-strait political relations remains thorny and distant. The reality and ideals are wide apart. Uncertain factors may test the political wisdom of leaders on the two sides and influence cross-strait political developments.
