Improper coin design affect not only the daily convenience, but also induce the lost due to discriminate error, even cause strife, especially affected the visual disabled person even more. This study tested the tactile discriminability of the existing Taiwanese coin system by the visually-handicapped and the usability of Braille on the new version of NT (New Taiwan) $50 coins released in 1996 and NT20 coins released in 2001 were evaluated. The first test of this study is the touch discriminability test of the coins, to analysis the error rate of touch discriminability of the new coins, then, a Braille effect of the new coins was tested for the visual disabled person. Further more, the teachers and students of the Cbi-Ming School (A skill training school for the visual disabled person of Taiwan) were interviewed to analysis the preferable discriminability design factors. This study finds that: (1) The highest error rate occurs between the new NT20 and old NT10 coins (44% and 36% of error rate respectively). (2) Due to the similarity of coin design, the highest error rates occurs in the pair of new NT50/NT20 (with error rate of 15.3%), then followed by the new NT20/Old NT 10 pair (12.5% of error rate). (3) The Braille discriminability of the new NT20 design is superior than the NT50 design, but their discriminability acceptance rate by the visual disabled is still low (28%). (4) To improve the touch discriminability of the coins system, this study suggest that the diameter ratio should be larger than 1.18 between similar coin pairs, the thickness ratio should be larger than 1.20, or the multiple of the diameter ratio and the thickness ratio should be larger than 1.42 for a better touch discriminability of the new coins design.
