Effect of the Inhibiting Cellular Phone Use on Driver's Perceived Risk While Driving

摘要


The main objective of the study was to investigate the difference in driving behaviors after the regulation was implemented. A battery of questionnaires was used to examine the driving behaviors of 194 and 170 subjects, respectively, with an interval of 27 months. Results showed that the effect of no-phone-using while driving was significant on driver's behaviors. That is, the drivers' risk perception in using mobile phone while driving was increased and the frequency of the usage by drivers was therefore decreased for most of interviewed drivers However, the change of these two variables on drivers who were prone to accidents was very little (score: +0.05 for perceived risk and -0.02 for frequency, p>0.05). In our observation, only 17% drivers changed the mobile phone to a hand-free type after inhibiting from cellular phone use. In practice, the traffic police are difficult to make sure if the driver used mobile phone or not. This would encourage the drivers trying to use mobile phone again while driving and result in the advantage of no-using regulation on safer behavior being increasingly disappeared.
