The Usability Study of Travel Aided Devices for the Visually Impaired

This study assessed the use of travel-aid devices for the visually impaired persons under various scenes. Three experimental sceneries were designed and tested: the use of single white cane, an electrical obstacle detector and the combination of the two devices. Fifteen visually impaired subjects (4 teachers, 5 junior and 6 senior high school students from National Taichung School for the Visually Impaired) were invited to participate in this study. A designed questionnaire was applied to collect information about the usability of the tested devices at the end of the experimental tasks. The results showed that the walking speed was significantly different among three different experimental settings. With the combination of single white cane and the obstacle detector, the subjects' walking speed could be improved and the number of hitting against the obstacles was minimized. The results indicate the combination of single white cane and a detector was the most efficient device for the visually impaired person to travel. All subjects showed increasing confidence in using the obstacle detector, and 80% of the subjects preferred to use this device when it is available. The accomplished device in the study was expected to improve mobility of the visually impaired persons and to reduce their travel inconvenience.
