Application of Human Factors Engineering on Investigation of Types and Locations of a Visual Information Display System

The line of sight of the driver leaving the road is usually the main cause of car accidents. In order to decrease the length of time in which the line of sight of the driver leaves the road, nowadays car companies equip their high class cars with a Head-UP Display(HUD). However, car drivers' acceptance of the amount of information shown on an HUD has not received sufficient attention in the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to build a simulator and determine what kind of information people normally want to have displayed on an HUD, the position of information placement, the maximum amount of information which can be showed once at one time, the way the information is shown, the size of each piece of information, and finally the brightness in different situations. Based on the questionnaire we designed, A software called MATLAB is used to carry out statistical analysis. And an interface for the other researchers is built to easily find out the MATLAB results. The result of analysis shows that the position of information should be placed at on the left bottom of the window. The maximum number of different pieces of information is four. The size of the display should not vary from the original design. The brightness at night is the only situation that the testers cannot accept. The information people normally want is the car's speed, the lines to help drivers stay on the road, an arrow for guiding, fuel consumption and the speed limit.
