User Experience Design and Research on Reusable Water Cups in Running Events

In recent years, running events are booming in Taiwan and have become a major sport. However, most running events provide disposable cups at the supply station for runners to drink water, so that the whole Taiwan running events consume about 4million disposable cups a year, which is equivalent to the heigh to 394 TAIPEI 101 buildings. With the rise of concept of sustainability, government and company are committed to improving the problem of single-use waste. for example, company A provide reusable water cups rental services during running events. However, when runners hold the cup for a long time, it will be difficult to grasp the cup due to the sweat of the palm, or cause the cup to fall, so they are reluctant to actively use this service. Therefore, this study conducts user experience design method, including research, design, and test, to discuss the behavior and experience of using reusable water cups when running for a long time and try to propose feasible solutions. Finally, through an iterative design process, the design team propose the auxiliary bushing, that would allow runners the freedom to alternate use between thumbs or wrists. After field testing, it was found that more than half of the test subjects represent that it was convenient to use the auxiliary bushing to refill drinking water and carry the reusable cup for running. At the same time, nearly 80% of the subjects are willing to use this auxiliary bushing for a long run with reusable cup. The main reasons may come from: allowing runners to choose their own using methods; reducing runners' operation steps in the water supply process. Reusable cup service has not been widely used in running activities. It is hoped that the results of this study can be used as a reference for further research.
