Dental discolorations are divided into extrinsic and intrinsic factors according to the location and etiology of the stain. Extrinsic dental stain is found on the tooth surface and could be subdivided or classified into two categories: metallic and nonmetallic. Intrinsic dental stain is due to the presence of chromogenic material within enamel or dentin. This type of stain can be divided into two groups: congenital (pre-eruptive) and acquired (post-eruptive). Basically, the treatment outcome of extrinsic dental stains will be much better than intrinsic dental discolorations.
