The Effects of Resistance Training on Functional Fitness in the Elderly: Difference between High versus Low-Velocity

With aging society in Taiwan, the conditions of abundant labors has transformed gradually into that of severe low birth-rate and aging population. An estimate suggests that by 2060 it is to be a hyper-aged society. It is an issue of importance regarding how to have the elderly be independent and ensuring their safety to accomplish daily physical activities and to promote their functional fitness. Resistance training can improve muscle strength, muscle endurance, muscle mass and bone density, bettering the functional fitness. However, with aged elderly, the decreasing level at which the power loses is more and faster than that of muscle strength. With respect to their daily needs, for instance, to dodge the vehicles toward themselves and to weaken the instant power caused by falling off and so on, power is better at coping with these sudden situations than muscle strength. The study through the analysis of comparative references finds that it is not only more effective to level up the elderly's functional fitness by power resistance training than by traditional one, but also improves daily independency and functional effects for the elderly's daily lives.
