This research adopted case study to explore how the new public management trend impacted the professionalism of the teachers serving in a rural small school. This study adopted interviews on three teachers to investigate their work experiences and feelings. Some of the findings revealed the following. The case school provided the parents and students with alternative courses, which was beneficial to school survival. However, in order to fulfill the responsibilities and reach performance targets of these courses, the teachers' workload was intensified; Besides, a contradiction existed between performance management and teacher autonomy. Unlike elite-oriented junior high schools, the school advocated practices of fairness and justice. Accordingly, the teachers and the school employed resistance and transformation strategies and developed toward professionalism.
