本文主要討論台灣東部排灣族的palji傳說。首先概述排灣族palji傳說的主要內涵,並說明此傳說所流傳的範圍。接著以馬淵東一在臺東地區採集的palji傳說而寫成的文章〈排灣族邪眼的例子及其他〉為主要資料,分析palji傳說在台東流傳的特點。由於傳說是一種非常能突顯地方特色的文類,因此,本文也會討論其他地區所流傳的palji傳說,以突顯台東在區域、族群與歷史上的特殊之處。本研究發現,流傳在臺東地區的palji傳說,其敘事時常呈現出排灣族與卑南族之互動與衝突,且常強調palji異能用於戰事的功能。此外,透過palji傳說亦能瞭解口頭敘事與排灣族階序社會兩者之間的關係。
The palji legend that spread among Paiwan indigenous ethic group in eastern Taiwan is explored in this essay. Firstly, the content of palji legend and the popularity of it will be introduced. Secondly, certain features of the circulation of palji legend will also be summarized according to an essay entitled ”The Cases of Evil Eye in the Paiwan Ethnic Group”, which was written by a Japanese anthropologist, Mabuchi Toichi. Because legend is a literature genre, which can easily reveal the local characteristics of a region, I also pay attention on various palji legend that were popular in other areas to point out the uniqueness of the geography, ethics and history of Taitung area. Lastly, some results are discovered that palji legend was frequently told to present the interactions and conflicts between Paiwan and Puyuma ethic groups in Taitung and the supernatural ability of palji, which is employed in wars, was emphasized in their narrative. In addition, the relationship between oral narrative and hierarchical society in Paiwan will also be presented in this essay.
