The purpose of this article is to explore the alleviating, influencing, or therapeutic effects of exercise intervention on depression. Depression is both a psychological state and a mind-body ailment, typically characterized by a range of unpleasant emotions such as sadness, sorrow, despair, and lethargy. According to statistics from the Central Health Insurance Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2022, there were a total of 1.54 million people in Taiwan who used antidepressants in 2021, highlighting the significance of depression as an issue to be addressed. The diagnosis of depression can be made by referring to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the Inernational Statistical Classifcation of Diseases and Related Health Problem(ICD) disease classification system, or by using the Taiwanese Depression Scale to assess whether oneself or those around have a tendency towards depression. Based on the results of some previous studies, it is known that exercise therapy is more effective than medication or counseling in treating depression. Therefore, for individuals with a tendency towards depression, engaging in regular exercise is a preferable choice.
