The first academic paper related to psychology of religion was published in Taiwan in 1974, and in 1990 the field became an official course of study within higher education; yet, since then, an academic article offering an overall assessment and review of this important research field has yet to appear. Using "psychology of religion" as the key search term, I have compiled theses from departments of religion and psychology and articles from journals that primarily focus on the subjects. These works can be divided into six main subjects-mental health, religiosity, conversion, religious experience, hospice or spiritual care, and other works in dialogue with theories of psychology-among which, mental health receives the most attention. From my analysis, it is clear that the crossover between psychology and religious studies is primarily found in the field of counseling psychology. Finally, drawing on the conceptual perspective of irreducibility, I suggest that religious scholars need a more systematic grasp of psychological theory, while psychologists need to move beyond the notion of personal religion and attend to the social and cultural aspects of religions.
