The Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in News English Teaching

Improving teaching and learning in the classroom has been the key issue facing English teachers. As the ever-changing information & communication technology (ICT) prospers, English teachers today need to know how to take advantage of ICT to further improve their teaching and inspire students' learning motivation. With abundant internet resources, teachers who teach News English no longer need news items weeks or months in advance as their teaching material today. On the contrary, they can download the most up-to- date news from the web sites of internationally acclaimed newspapers or even scripts of English news broadcast for their teaching. For students, ICT based News English lessons produce audio/video effect and is better than just listening to teachers lecturing on obsolete news edited in a book. In this paper, I would like to share my experience in using ICT in the teaching of News English with teachers working in this field. First of all, I will talk about what teachers need to take note of lesson planning in News English teaching. Then, advantages of use of ICT in News English teaching will be examined, followed by what abilities teachers of News English should possess in face of the educational and societal change surrounding the introduction of ICT today. Finally, I would like to reiterate that technology can only support teaching; however, it could never replace the role of teacher in the classroom.
