Reporting the Same Event? A Case Study of Language and Ideology in the Taiwanese Press

This paper, targeting at the news coverage related to the insider trading of the Taiwan Development Corporation share in Liberty Times and United Daily News-two ideologically opposed newspapers in Taiwan, aims to reveal how these two newspapers represent the same event. Taking critical discourse analysis and conceptual metaphor theory as the theoretical consideration, this paper, exploring the representations of the whole case, the key persons involved as well as the prosecuting/investigating system(s) in Taiwan, has confirmed that UDN's strategy exposes its disbelief toward Chao and President Chen. On the other hand, the representation of this issue in LT shows it leans toward the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, especially toward President Chen.
