Division of Plastic Surgeny, Surgical Department, Chinese Airforce General Hospital. Fingertip Injuries are very common and they are managed in a variety of ways with variable results. General considerations in the managment of fingertip injuries include sensation, stability, strength, position, mobility and appearance. The results of reconstruction should be both functionally and cosmetically acceptable. Reconstruction of the nail bed should be viewed as an integral part of fingertip reconstruction. The nail has both functional and cosmetic importance. Free nail bed grafting is an accepted technique which, in isolation, is not technically diffcult. However, when nailbed injuries occur together with soft tissue injuries, reconstruction may be complicated. Such injuries may be best treated by initial attention to the soft tissues, aiming to preserve digital length, followed by immediate reconstruction of the nail bed.
