197 readings of the Icterometer of Thos. A. Ingram & Co. applied to icteric Chinese neonates within one week of age, in the Nursery and Pediatric Ward of National Taiwan University Hospital, during March-April of 1964 were done. Each time the corresponding serum bilirubin level was checked by Malloy and Evelyn's method. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The serum bilirubin values for each grade of the Icterometer on its table can not directly be applied to the use in Chinese neonates. When applied to Chinese neonates the grades of the Icterometer show somewhat lower serum bilirubin levels than those on its table. The bilirubin values for the use in Chinese neonates are listed on Table I. 2. In Chinese neonates, when the Icterometer reading is grade 4½ or over, laboratory check of serum bilirubin is indicated.
