Seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis among pet dogs in Taipei City was investigated from June to September in 1997 by the latex agglutination assay. A total of 457 sera, including 252 male and 205 female dogs, were screened for anti-Toxoplasma antibodies. The overall seroprevalence was 10.3% (47/457). No significant difference was observed in seroprevalence between male (11.1%) and female (9.3%) dogs (P > 0.05). However, mixed-bred dogs (14.5%) had higher seroprevalence than pure-bred ones (8.9%) (P<0.05). Also, older pet dogs (14.0%) had higher seroprevalence than younger ones (5.3%). With regard to the source of the dogs, the highest seropositivity was 27.8% (5/18) for dogs in Chung-Shan district, followed by 18.2% (6/33) in Nan-Kung district, 13.0% (3/23) in Wan-Hwua district. 12.9% (11/85) in Ta-An district, 11.6% (5/43) in Sung-Shan district, 9.4% (3/32) in Shih-Lin district. 8.3% (1/12) in Ta-Toung and Pei-Tou districts, 7.1% (9/127) in Chin-I district. 5.3% (1/19) in Nei-Hu district, 4.7% (2/43) in Wun-Shan district, and 0.0% (0/10) in Chung-chen distric.
