Analysis of Development Potential of Ivory Shell (Babylonia spp.) Industry in Taiwan

Ivory shells (Babylonia spp.) are the economic important marine gastropods in Indo-Pacific area. The market price and demand of Ivory shell are continued soaring due to the decreasing of natural stocks exploited from various traditional fishing areas. On the other hand, it deadly needs to find a solution to the problem of plenty free small abalone (Haliotis diversicolor) aquaculture spaces in Taiwan. Aquaculture of Ivory shell may be a feasible solution. In this review, we introduce the basic biology of Ivory shells , update the aquaculture conditions, and analyze the development potential of ivory shell industry in Taiwan.
