This article concentrates on the investigation of Wagner's first opera, Die Feen, which he composed when he was only 20 years old. At first, it deals with the question about the periods of Wagner's compositions, in order to position Die Feen, which is at the beginning of a long art career with its proper place in the entire works. In discussion of the opera, the article will try to reconstruct the backgrounds of the creation processes, to present the value and importance of the opera in the psychology of the young composer. In the following argumentations, the influences of E. T. A. Hoffmann will be especially brought up, because Wagner saw him as a representative of German Romanticism and admired him. In Die Feen, Hoffmann's aesthetic insights are confirmable in many aspects. Finally, many themes and motives which Die Feen has furthermore characterize Wagner's mature works; they will be grubbed, so that a direct connection between the often ignored first opera of the master, and his middle and late works, can be established.
