Use of Morphological and Ecological Variations for Classification of Hoki Groups

The study concerning Hoki groups in waters around New Zealand is seldom conducted. In present paper, the author dealt with some morphological and ecological characteristics to investigate this problem. The frequency distribution of ring patterns on otolith, the relatrionships between body length and characters of otolith, together with the distribution and migration, maturation and spawning, feeding habit, together with the distribution and migration, maturation and spawning, feeding habit, and growth were discussed. The fish in the NORTHWEST and the SOUTH regions show much more similarity in most of the morphological and ecological characteristics than the fish in the EAST region. Also, there are some indications of fish between regions. But the fish spawn at different regions in almost the same season, and feed in different grounds, showing different self-perpetuating systems. Therefore, fish in the three regions are considered to be different groups.
